Gostiny Dvor (means Guests house) is the earliest & the largest department store in St. Petersburg. It accommodates a number of shops & a hencely named metro station. The spot serves as a check-point for most of the citizens.
DetailsWorth seeing because it is one of the monuments of early Classicism style. Started by Rastrelli, one of the "fathers" of our city, but mainly built by another brilliant architect Vallen-Delamoth, it opened in 1785. It is over 1 km/almost a mile in perimeter & overlooks four streets including Nevsky.
It was reconstructed several times & badly damaged during the siege of Leningrad but the shell of the building was preserved. Has a number of shops & cafes.
Open daily 10:00 to 22:00
PassageGostiny Dvor set kind of a model for other trading houses. A hundred years later the one opposite side of the street a Passage was built (1846-48).
It is an arcade of shops & boutiques that connects Nevsky to a parallel street to the European patterns. It used to be a place for the promenade of the citizens. Still now it includes a small theatre that was opened in the besieged Leningrad in 1942. Now it has a supermarket on the ground floor
Open Mon-Sat, 10:00 to 21:00.
